What is CAT4 and Why Do Schools Use it?
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) is an assessment developed by GL Assessment and used by many schools in the UK and internationally.
Unlike traditional school examinations, CAT4 is designed to assess how students reason and solve problems rather than test what they have learned in the classroom.
It assesses four areas of reasoning:

Verbal Reasoning — Understanding and reasoning with words.

Quantitative Reasoning — Recognising numerical patterns and relationships.

Non-verbal Reasoning — Identifying patterns and relationships in shapes and diagrams.

Spatial Ability — Mentally manipulating shapes and visualising objects in different orientations
Why Do Schools Use CAT4?
State schools often use CAT4 to baseline cohorts each year and to identify strengths and learning needs.
Independent schools frequently use CAT4 for setting/streaming and, in many cases, as part of Year 7 admissions. Some ask applicants in Year 6 to sit CAT4 or provide recent CAT4 scores.
