TARGET TOP UNIVERSITIES WITH OUR BESPOKE PROJECT COURSES

Super-Curricular Project Courses

WHAT IS A SUPER-CURRICULAR PROJECT?

When universities are assessing students’ suitability to their courses, they will look for evidence of study and learning outside of the usual school curriculum. Often, good grades at school are just the starting point and with increasing competition for university places students must work hard to stand out from the rest of the applicants. Our Super-curricular courses are designed to help them do just that. These hugely popular and innovative courses allow students to take on a guided project outside of the usual school syllabus to demonstrate a real passion and enthusiasm for the course they are applying for. This helps them to really stand out in their application and impresses university admissions staff greatly.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT?

We will talk with the student to determine their objectives and courses applied for. Then we will find an area of interest that they have which aligns with those courses and design several project briefs for the student to choose from. Students can take one or more projects, and these can range from practical to desk-based giving students a lot of flexibility and choice. We ensure that the projects will include some first-year undergraduate level work to showcase the students’ abilities to the admissions tutors. Students will be guided every step of the way, and any additional skills or knowledge will be taught so the student not only completes a project to impress the universities but also learn skills and knowledge that will be used when they are at university.

We have run several interesting and unique projects with our students including:

·     A working cable car model with sensors and Arduino microcontroller

·     Using fractal dimension analysis to analyse the erosion of coastlines

·     Build your own spectrometer using a smartphone to analyse the light from stars

·     Build a particle cloud chamber to show evidence of particles such as muons

·     Using differential calculus to model ice sheet melting and freezing under different conditions

·     Using statistical analysis to look at the effectiveness of government policy in healthcare and education

Any many, many more.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Complete the form below or contact us at enquiries@apexlearners.co.uk stating which university course you are interested in and we will arrange to speak with the student and ask them a few questions about their university objectives and areas of interest. We will then align these areas with the university courses being applied to and propose a number of project briefs to discuss with the student in more detail. Students can take one or more projects although we usually suggest no more than three. Desk based project usually take around 4 hours to complete although more theoretical projects and practical projects can take up to 12 hours. This is all discussed with the student beforehand, and the idea is that the student will not need to do any extra work outside of the project lessons to complete the project successfully (although there may be some work required in the case of practical projects). Once the project is complete, we will suggest a conclusion which the student can then adapt and add to their Personal Statement to best showcase the skills and knowledge they have learned and help them to stand out in their university application.
